UIB Manifesto:
The UIB reaffirms its commitment to peace, international law and human rights
The University of the Balearic Islands reaffirms its commitment to peace, international law, and human rights as essential foundations for guaranteeing the well-being, security, and prosperity of all peoples.
After two world conflicts that caused tens of millions of deaths—mostly civilians—the destruction of entire cities, and incalculable suffering, states decided to establish an international system based on dialogue, cooperation, respect for national sovereignty, the protection of human rights, and the prohibition of the use of force. The creation of the United Nations was a direct response to the desire to preserve these principles and guarantee peaceful coexistence among states.
In recent years, however, we have witnessed with growing concern not only the repeated violation of these norms but also deliberate and systematic attempts to dismantle the international system that upholds them. In this context, the unilateral bombings carried out against a sovereign state, Venezuela, as well as the kidnapping of its head of state, cannot be interpreted as isolated incidents, but rather as a further step in this process of dismantling the international order.
- The University of the Balearic Islands warns that the abandonment of international law and the institutions created to guarantee it represents a serious setback for global peace, security, and coexistence. When the common norms that regulate relations between states are ignored or eroded, the system based on dialogue and cooperation is replaced by unilateral imposition and the law of the strongest, with direct consequences for the protection of human rights and the security of civilian populations worldwide.
- Faced with this situation, the University of the Balearic Islands cannot remain silent. The very conditions that make its existence possible—peace, freedom, and respect for international law—are essential for the university to fulfill its mission of research, teaching, and the transmission of knowledge in service to humanity.
For all these reasons, the University of the Balearic Islands condemns the violation of international law and human rights in Venezuela, Ukraine, Palestine, Sudan, and throughout the world, and reiterates its call for strict respect for international law, fundamental rights, and the multilateral institutions that are meant to protect them.
Peace is not only a destination: it is also the path to reach it.
