Those of us between 65 and 95 years old—that is, those of us alive who were born between 1930 and 1960—can be considered the Vertex Generation. From our vantage point, we have seen and lived through the past, and we see and live through the present, which is inextricably linked to the immediate future.
Technological advancements in human manufacturing have progressed more from 1950 to the present (in 75 years) than from the beginning of humanity until 1950 (in several million years).
We, the Vertex Generation, have lived through the world of the past and are living through the world of the present and future.
We have lived through the end of World War II, the Vietnam War; and now, sadly, we are living through the war in Ukraine and Israel's genocide in Palestine;
we have lived through the Franco regime of the 20th century and now we are witnessing the resurgence of unfettered capitalism associated with a new fascism emerging in the 21st century.
We lived through a time that marked the beginning of the automobile and commercial aviation era, and now we are experiencing an explosion of excessive car and airplane traffic. In Palma (Mallorca), we now see an average of 670 flights a day, including arrivals and departures, 24 hours a day, whereas in 1950 there was an average of only 3 to 5 flights daily, counting takeoffs and landings.
In 1960, the total population of the Balearic Islands was 439,465, and in 2025 it was 1,249,844. This means that in 1960 the population density was 88.03 inhabitants per square meter, and currently it is 250.38 inhabitants per square meter.
In 1960, 400,000 tourists visited the Balearic Islands, while in 2025, that number rose to 19,500,000. This means that in 1960, the ratio of tourists to the islands' surface area (4,992 km²) was 80, while in 2025 it was 3,906.25.
Due to the irresponsible and greedy policies of the PP-Vox governments in the Balearic Islands and the actions of speculators in the tourism and housing industries, tourism and real estate speculation have become neither responsible nor sustainable, causing significant harm to the population and the environment.
In 1960, the Balearic Islands received fewer than one tourist per inhabitant (a 1:1 ratio), while in 2025, this figure reached 15.6 tourists per inhabitant (a 15.6:1 ratio).
The Vertex Generation (GV) witnessed the launch of the first artificial satellite; currently, there are thousands, creating a cloud of metallic debris orbiting the Earth. Now, even private individuals can launch satellites into space (initially, this was exclusive to the governments of the most advanced countries). Elon Musk (whose net worth is equivalent to that of a million people of average wealth) claims to have a program to launch 1,500 new satellites. Until now, all artificial satellites were for meteorological or astronomical exploration. Now, satellites are being designed for warfare (they are loaded with projectiles that can be launched from space).
The atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima (Little Boy, 1945) had a yield of approximately 15 kilotons, enough to cause widespread destruction throughout the city. However, the most powerful nuclear bomb currently in existence, the Tsar Bomba (USSR, 1961), has a yield of 50 megatons, the same yield as the 50-megaton bomb dropped on Hiroshima. It is so powerful that, despite being 65 years old, it has never been used.
Well, the current generation has experienced all these events of the past and also all those of the present, with a focus on the future. Our parents and godparents, on the other hand, have experienced all those events of the past, but none of those of the present and future. Our children and grandchildren are experiencing all those events of the present and future, but have not experienced any of those of the past.
