When I see these so-called "saviors of the nation"—who are, in reality, the exact opposite: traitors to their own country—jumping around and chanting, "I am Spanish, Spanish, Spanish; I am Spanish, Spanish, Spanish," I feel a profound sense of vicarious embarrassment. It only confirms my own shame at being a national of the same country as these underdeveloped, unhinged fanatics. The only thing that makes me happy to be Spanish—specifically an islander from Mallorca—is the success achieved by our men’s and women’s national football teams. Everything else brings me more shame than pride.
The three photos serve as key indicators of what I mean when I speak of the underdevelopment of our country.
1. The lack of civic-mindedness shown by the person or persons who dump large, bulky items in front of or on top of trash containers, rather than taking them to a designated recycling point—as civilized people in civilized nations would do. Do any of you believe you would ever see something like this in Switzerland, Sweden, Monaco, the Vatican, or Denmark? The citizens of those countries are more civic-minded and more intelligent than we are.
2. People living on the streets or in places that fall far short of being adequate, dignified housing. In fact, many people—both young and old—are currently protesting across Spain and elsewhere against the exorbitant cost of buying or renting a home, a situation driven by the elitist and unsustainable policies of governments like those of the PP, Vox, and their ilk. Can you imagine even a single homeless person in any of the countries I mentioned as a point of comparison?
3. Begging. In Palma, there is almost always a beggar in front of every Mercadona supermarket, as well as in other locations.
These are three indicators of Spain’s underdevelopment—indicators that one would certainly not find, not even in a single instance, in developed nations.
This is further confirmed by the GDP per capita of Western European countries: Spain ranks 22nd out of 24 nations, surpassing only Portugal and Greece, while trailing all other Western European countries.
The 2025 PISA report indicates that there is also a need for more and better training:
So much for the evidence of underdevelopment—though there is more: the rhetoric of PP and Vox leaders, rife with insults (and, in Ayuso’s case, crass vulgarities) and blatant lies, entirely devoid of substantive proposals or arguments—not to mention the brutish behavior of party members and supporters. How many votes would Feijóo, Abascal, Ayuso, or Prohens garner in the countries I’ve cited as benchmarks? Very few, if any at all—because the citizens of those nations think more critically than those in Spain and are far less easily deceived.
And what are the root causes of these dismal realities?
The solution: reclaim the usurped Republic and abandon the Bourbon-Francoist monarchy imposed by the dictator.
More education, less "capitalo-fascism."
Education that renders such heavy-handed, coercive, and repressive force unnecessary.
Greater respect for the rule of law, and an end to partisanship within the judiciary and police—professions that must remain strictly objective and impartial, serving the entire citizenry rather than just a specific segment.
Education, education, and more education.
Civic education and good citizenship.
Uphold the truth and the value of life; reject the constant use of lies, defamation, and slander; and refuse to fraternize with those who commit genocide.
Had it not been for the coup d'état, the genocide, and the system of fear, hunger, and injustice—which has persisted for 90 years—Spain (including the islands, Mallorca, and Palma) would today, in terms of its economy and level of knowledge, rank among the leading nations of Europe. It is up to you—up to all of you—to reverse this situation and ensure that, 90 years from now, Spain stands as a developed nation, on par with the world’s foremost countries.
